If you want to try it yourself
- Walk the whole fence and mark every loose, rotted or broken piece before you buy anything. Press on the posts: a post that moves at the ground is a bigger job than a board.
- Match the lumber type and board size. Treated pine is common, and new boards will look different until they weather.
- Use exterior screws or ring-shank nails rather than interior ones, which rust and stain the wood.
- For a sagging gate, check that the hinge side post is plumb and add a diagonal brace before you adjust the latch.
