If you want to try it yourself
- Do not just paint over a hole. Clean loose bits out, then fill it. Small nail holes need only spackle. Holes up to a few inches need a mesh patch.
- Apply thin coats and let each one dry. Two thin coats beat one thick coat, which cracks and shrinks.
- Sand flat with a sanding block, then wipe the dust off before you prime.
- Prime the patch, then paint a little past its edges so the patch does not show through. Matching an old paint color is the hardest part, so keep a bit of the original paint or bring a chip to the store.
